Major scientific experiences and interests
Bacillus subtilis protein secretion:
Investigations on the late stages of secretion of native and heterologous proteins with a view to process optimisation, focussing on the relationship between protein structure, kinetics of folding, stability and passage through the cell wall.
Sequencing and functional analysis of the genome of Bacillus subtilis:
Member of the International Co-ordinating Committee for the sequencing of the genome of Bacillus subtilis (published in Nature in November 1997). I was a member of EU-funded Bacillus subtilis Functional Analysis Programme and currently coordinate the EU-funded programme investigating the regulatory networks controlling the response of Bacillus subtilis to changes in its environment (BACELL Net).
The phosphate starvation response in industrial Gram-positive bacteria:
Notably Bacillus subtilis and Streptomyces coelicolor, focussing on the role of signal transduction pathways for controlling the cell's response to phosphate starvation at the level of gene expression and interactions with the general stress response.
